Hope is Alive

18-month-old Rory came out of the womb thriving, following in her four-year-old sister’s footsteps and meeting her milestones: walking, talking, eating, even singing. Her parents blinked, and six months later, Rory had a feeding tube, a shunt to drain fluid from her brain, and a tracheostomy for respiratory support due to a tumor in her brainstem.

After cancer treatment initially worked and then failed, Rory returned home to North Carolina for end-of-life care. And then a miracle happened. Rory made a comeback.

With her limbs moving and neurological status improving, Rory became a candidate for pediatric rehab, a place to regain strength and buy valuable time with her family.

The challenge: Dad continues to operate his plumbing business with the family van to pay living costs and bills, and Mom has a 2007 Acura. Both vehicles lack air conditioning. The 100-degree summer heat led to missed medical appointments and therapy sessions—a 90-minute round trip from home—until Novant social worker Diana reached out to Jane’s Fund.

Hope showed up in the form of a new, reliable car with space for Rory’s medical equipment.
