Thanks, Dad. Love, Eloco
Married with four kids, working a steady job, weekends filled with cookouts, homework, and basketball practice… that was life. A simple, joyful rhythm — one Dad hardly remembers, let alone imagines now.
In early 2025, Dad’s life took an incomprehensible turn. His oldest son, Eloco, was diagnosed with DIPG — an aggressive brain cancer without a cure. The hospital is now eight-year-old Eloco's home, with weeks of radiation treatments that offer borrowed time.
Grandpa and nurses take hospital shifts so Mom and Dad can keep working — a necessity to keep the lights on, put food on the table, and pay the mortgage. Before now, Dad never worried about missing a payment, much less losing his home because of medical bills and days away from work.
Walking onto the pediatric oncology floor for the last time, Dad gives Eloco a deep confidence that only his dad can provide as Eloco prepares to take his last ambulance ride home. Meeting with nurses, Dad learns how to take on the responsibility of his son's complex healthcare needs. Dad says goodbye to the care team, ready to follow the ambulance with Eloco inside back to their home. Tori, their social worker hands Dad a note and simply says, “Your mortgage has been paid off."
Stunned, Dad stands silent. Taking a deep breath, he whispers, “God bless you.”
Dad, thank you for showing the world what it means to be a Father!
