Hello Summer
Stories from first-time campers will always remain heavy on our hearts because they remind us exactly why camp matters — and why we must continue giving more children the chance to experience it.
For many students supported by Jane’s Fund, the start of summer doesn’t mean vacations, camps, and carefree memories. It can mean empty days without supervision, food insecurity, isolation, and a lack of mentoring from coaches and teachers.
On the final night of sleep-away camp in the North Carolina mountains, 10-year-old Damien was asked his favorite part of the week.
His response:
“I’ve never slept in my own bed before… and I’ll never forget having my own bunk bed.”
At his first day of overnight camp, Joseph nervously filled his pockets with apples and extra food from the lunch buffet. A counselor gently pulled him aside and said:
“Joseph, you don’t have to save food in your pockets. There will be food again at dinner — and every day you’re here.”
As camp came to an end, nine-year-old Keri hugged her new friends and counselors goodbye, tears streaming down her face as she asked:
“This has been the best week of my entire life. Can I please come back next summer?”
KERI, YES YOU CAN.
Because of supporters like you, Jane’s Fund has helped send 2,600 children to camp.
