Roadtrip

Living in North Carolina is a privilege because both the mountains and the beach are just a short drive away. Summer is here, which for many means finding seashells along the shore or hiking to a waterfall while on vacation. Yet many students at Jane’s Fund have no travel plans.

What they do have are memories from recent school road trips that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Fourth graders at Merry Oaks Academy spent months of hard work caring for trout eggs before releasing the young fish into a mountain stream in the North Carolina mountains at the end of the school year. Never in their wildest dreams did they imagine the road trip itself would change their lives. Games and laughter on the bus gradually gave way to quiet wonder as students looked out the windows in awe of the mountains stretching toward the sky. Trout released, mission accomplished—and a world beyond Charlotte ignited new dreams.

Principal Pickard planned a life-changing three-day trip for her eighth graders at Ranson Middle School to the Outer Banks before school ended, and it comes as no surprise that the highlight for many students was running barefoot through the sand and catching their first glimpse of the vast Atlantic Ocean. Their second favorite activity? Driving across North Carolina and spending the night in a hotel with friends and teachers.

As you vacation this summer, Jane’s Fund is meeting with school leaders to create new opportunities for the upcoming school year. Imagine the awe and wonder of rolling down a sand dune or releasing a fish into a crystal-clear mountain stream. Then imagine living in North Carolina and never having the opportunity to take a road trip.

Thank you for helping Jane’s Fund provide experiences that ignite possibility, improve student attendance, and inspire children to believe the sky is the limit.
